Learning Together, Growing Together.

Citizens of Science (COS) is a unique student-led program that aims to address the disconnection between medical research and the general public.

Citizens of Science (CoS) is a free, student-powered mentoring program that connects everyday people with a curiosity about science (our mentees) to passionate medical research students (our mentors).

Through engaging conversations, hands-on lab experiences, and behind-the-scenes access, CoS pulls back the curtain on how biomedical research really works – not just the breakthroughs, but the day-to-day thinking, teamwork, and experimentation that drive discovery.

Whether you’re wondering what actually happens in a lab, how we study disease, or what “real scientists” do all day, CoS is your invitation to step inside and see science in action.

Science Literacy Development

We make biomedical research understandable, relatable, and genuinely interesting. CoS is aimed at those who feel they missed their chance at accessing science education elsewhere.

Building Collaboration and Community

CoS brings together researchers and the public to spark conversations, share knowledge, and build trust one project at a time.

Student Engagement

We give emerging scientists a unique opportunity to step outside the academic bubble and see the impact of their work through fresh eyes.

Citizens of Science will be back in 2026!

Participant Testimonial

  • Amazing Job

“My mentees were great! Equally interested and encouraging, and were upfront with when things were overwhelming or confusing. They asked great questions, and although I only had Sara for the final session and talk, I appreciated both of their engagement.” – Joel, CoS 2024 Mentor

  • Enjoyed every aspect of this program

“Yes, I was initially concerned that my project might be too complex to explain in easier language. However, with the support and feedback from the COS team on my documentation, I felt much more confident and satisfied.” – Munazzah, CoS 2024 Mentor

  • Enlightening

“The sessions were educational and enlightening. It was great to see get some insight into what happens at the “coal face” of research at WEHI.”  – Andrew, CoS 2023 Mentee

  • Excellent

“I found it challenging but rewarding With 40 years in Manufacturing almost any question I have an answer or an opinion. I had not done biology since 1970. This pushed me way out of my comfort zone.”– John, CoS 2024 Mentee
