Leadership

Jack

Founder

Post-Doctoral Researcher in Cell Signaling,
WEHI.
I founded Citizens of Science to equip everyday people with scientific literacy and to embed public consciousness in young scientists, so that everyone can actively contribute to the discussion and progress of science.

Sara

Co-Chair

PhD student in Immunology,
WEHI.
I’m co-chairing this year’s program because it’s exciting to give people a chance to see the science happening behind lab doors all while empowering Parkville students to become science communication champions.

Therese

Co-Chair

PhD student in Ovarian Cancer, PeterMac.
I am one of the co-chairs of the CoS program for 2025 and was previously a mentor.  I love that CoS is actively linking research with the wider community and as a mentor, it definitely helped me gain a new perspective on my own work. Effective science communication is truly necessary to fuel important discussions in research that can one day translate into meaningful outcomes for everyone.

Anju

Co-Chair

Research Assistant in Infection and Global Health, WEHI.
I am one of the co-chairs of the 2025 COS program and was previously a mentor in 2023. I found COS to be such a great experience and it really helped me improve how I communicated my research. Being part of the program reminded me how important it is for researchers to connect with the general public to make science more accessible. I’m excited to support this year’s group in bridging this gap!

Communications Team

Bessie

Marketing

PhD student in Infection and Global Health,
WEHI.
I joined the 2025 CoS team as one of the marketing leads because I was attracted by the idea of democratising science and making it more accessible to the public – the very people that our research is meant to serve.

Sarah

Marketing

PhD student in Breast Cancer,
Peter Mac.
I have a passion for making science and health accessible, and that’s why I’m part of the marketing team for CoS. I want to encourage students and members of the public to participate in this fantastic program.

Michelle

Social Media

PhD student in Blood Cancer,
WEHI.
I’m the social media manager for CoS this year because I want more students to get involved in this wonderful program to share their love for science, and more individuals from the public to learn and enhance their understanding towards science and research.

Hui Shi

Partnerships

PhD student in Immunology,
Peter Mac.
I first became involved with CoS through teaching a lab practical session and later joined the organising team. I joined Cos as I am passionate about improving public scientific literacy and fostering a greater appreciation for scientific research and advancement. Being part of this initiative also allows me to support the training of research students while contributing to a cause I find deeply meaningful.

Administrative Team

Munazzah

Team Admin

PHD student in Microbiology and Immunology, PDI.
I joined COS as a mentor in 2024 as I have always been excited to share my research with the community. I saw this program as a great opportunity to do so, while also improving my ability to communicate scientific ideas clearly and in accessible terms. I really enjoyed being part of the program and this year decided to take on a more active role by joining the organising team as the Team Secretary.

Weronika

Team Admin

PhD student in Cancer Immunotherapy, Peter Mac.
I first got involved in CoS as a mentor and then moved onto becoming one of the team admins. I joined CoS as I am passionate about our mission of cultivating a scientifically conscious society.

Events Team

Josephine

Events Coordinator

PhD graduate in Visual Neuroscience,
MDHS.
I’m the event coordinator for CoS this year, as I love organising events which connect the science community in Parkville, and seeing more people from the public to be engaged in science!

Asma

Events Coordinator

PhD student in Immunology,
WEHI.
I participated in the COS 2024 program as a mentor and was inspired by the impact it had on the general public. I believe science communication beyond the lab and scientific community is important. I am the event coordinator for the 2025 program and i’m excited to continue contributing and help make science more accessible and engaging to everyone.
